A comprehensive eye health check isn’t just about a new pair of spectacles or contact lenses. Thats why at Thomas & Holloway we remain excited about our Spectralis 4D OCT (Optical Coherence Tomographer) at the Dronfield practice. Unlike conventional retinal photography Spectralis 4D OCT allows capture of fantastic 3-dimensional images of the back of the eye, allowing us for the first time to look not only at the surface of the retina, but also at the numerous layers from which the retina is comprised (its a bit like now being able to see the layers of the cake, rather than just the icing on the top!). Its the equivalent of a CAT scan of your eye and can reveal early changes in the eye, which may be asymptomatic, and not detectable with a traditional visual examination.
Why 4D? Because whilst the images themselves are 3-dimensional the machine effectively takes a ‘retinal fingerprint’ of the back of the eye meaning that future scans can be taken in exactly the same place, therefore giving us the 4th dimension of time. This is critically important because change over time is a key determinant in the diagnosis and management of many conditions, for example glaucoma. The machine can measure this change accurate to 1/1000th of a millimetre, giving far more precision than is possible with visual assessment alone.
We think that all patients will benefit from Spectralis. There is no bright flash, no puff of air and in the majority of cases drops to dilate the eyes are not necessary. For those without known eye condition’s it offers the more comprehensive checks outlined above, but in addition it gives us a baseline against which future change can be measured. It would be of particular relevance to those with a family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration whereby the advantages of such precision assessment allow better diagnosis, monitoring and management. Of course, should it be required the output from the scans can be shared with GPs and hospital eye clinics.

Peace of mind for just £35. After all, we’ve only got one pair of eyes.
